MIRI: The traditional ‘Ranyai’ ritual took the spotlight at Tadika Cahaya Bintang Utara’s family day celebration on Sunday, bringing a heartening cultural touch to an otherwise modern preschool event.

Held at Dewan Dato Permaisuri Permyjaya here, the celebration, themed around Gawai Dayak, was graced by Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, who joined more than 100 preschoolers, parents, and teachers in the festivities.

The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the ‘Ranyai’- a joyful and symbolic dance performed by children around a tree adorned with colourful decorations, sweets, and small gifts. Rooted in Dayak tradition, the ceremony marks unity, gratitude, and the spirit of harvest.

“The ‘Ranyai’ is more than just a performance. It’s a beautiful way to introduce our children to Sarawak’s rich cultural tapestry and instil respect for the traditions of our diverse communities,” Lee said, visibly delighted as he watched the young participants dance.

This initiative by Tadika Cahaya Bintang Utara was applauded not only for its festive cheer but also for its meaningful role in early cultural education. It served as an experiential lesson for children to better understand the values, symbols, and practices of the Dayak community, many of whom form the backbone of Sarawak’s indigenous heritage.

Adding to the community-focused spirit of the day was the Program Jualan Rahmah Bergerak for the Senadin constituency, held concurrently at the same venue. The mobile sales initiative, aimed at easing the cost of living, offered essential goods at subsidised prices, aligning with the national Rahmah programme’s objective of supporting household needs.

The family day served as a vibrant reminder that schools can be powerful platforms for both learning and community engagement – not just through books, but through culture, compassion, and shared experience.

“This is the kind of event we need more where education meets culture and families come together not just to celebrate, but to understand one another better,” Lee added.
