KUCHING: Sarawak’s bold push towards a green economy has drawn the attention of Australia, with both sides now exploring joint efforts to advance clean energy transition and environmental sustainability.

This comes following a courtesy call on Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni by Robyn Cahill, Australia’s Minister of Trade, Business and Asian Relations.

During the meeting, Cahill expressed Australia’s interest in collaborating with Sarawak, citing the state’s forward-thinking energy policies and its potential as a key partner in the region.

“Your progressive direction in energy transition is impressive and aligns closely with Australia’s priorities,” she said.

She also noted the value of technical expertise and knowledge-sharing between both governments.

In the meantime, Dr Hazland shared Sarawak’s core environmental strategies, including the Sarawak Energy Transition Roadmap (SET-P), Sustainability Blueprint 2030 (SSB) and the Hydrogen Economy Roadmap (SHER), all of which form the backbone of the state’s move toward clean energy, carbon reduction, and sustainable technologies.

Both sides discussed the potential for joint research, industry-academia partnerships, and pilot projects in areas such as hydrogen production, carbon capture, and nature-based solutions.

The meeting also emphasised capacity building and regular engagement through bilateral platforms.

Also present at the session were Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Australia’s Department of Trade, Business and Asian Relations Kelly Ralston, and president of the Sarawak-Australia Business Chamber Rodger Chan.

The meeting marks another step forward in Sarawak’s global outreach and reinforces its commitment to international cooperation in addressing shared climate challenges.
