KUCHING: The Scouts Association of Malaysia Sarawak Branch is set to deepen its longstanding collaboration with maritime agencies, particularly through its Sea Scout section, with a renewed focus on marine safety, education, and environmental stewardship.

A courtesy visit was made on Wednesday (June 25) to the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) as part of efforts to strengthen the partnership.

The delegation was led by Captain Zainuddin Hamdan, honorary commissioner of the Sea Scouts, and Methodius Macdonald George Segie, Abang Zulfikar Abang Zaini, Fauziah Pata, Zasran Abdullah, Sapri Ahmad, and several senior sea scouts.

Zainuddin noted that Sarawak’s Sea Scouts have regularly participated in marine education camps and workshops in collaboration with key maritime bodies, including the Marine Department and MMEA.

He said the scouts were now seeking greater collaboration, given the upcoming Sarawak Sea Scout Marine Education Camp, scheduled to take place from Aug 29 to Sept 1 at Telok Melano.

“We aim to equip our sea scouts with practical maritime knowledge while instilling values of environmental conservation and civic responsibility,” he said.

During the visit, Admiral I Maritime Mohd Khairi Abd Aziz expressed his appreciation for the scouts’ outreach and reaffirmed MMEA’s readiness to support scouting activities, particularly those that align with maritime safety and education.

“The MMEA is pleased to support community-based initiatives such as these.

“Our cooperation will include assistance with water safety training, boat handling, maritime communication, knot-tying, and rescue techniques,” he said.

He added that the agency is prepared to assist with the upcoming camp based on the needs and logistical requirements outlined by the scouts.

The ongoing collaboration is viewed as a platform not only for knowledge sharing but also for inspiring young people to consider careers in the maritime field.

At the same time, the scouts will play a meaningful role in promoting coastal environmental awareness and supporting marine conservation initiatives.

By engaging with maritime agencies, the Sea Scouts hope to contribute to a more informed and environmentally responsible generation.
