LIMBANG: The Sarawak government, under the Ministry of Food Industry, Commodities, and Regional Development (M-FICORD), is focusing efforts on making Limbang and Lawas commercial buffalo production centres in the region.
According to Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, the shift in policy is part of the Sarawak government’s plan to modernise the state’s agricultural sector.
He said that M-FICORD is currently collaborating with foreign companies to establish a buffalo milk processing plant here to produce cheese.
“The Sarawak government is planning to modernise the agricultural sector.
“Our policy and focus are to make Limbang and Lawas buffalo production areas,” he said at the launch of the Babulang Festival and Buffalo Race 2025 in Batu Danau here today, representing Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
To support this effort, he said, the Sarawak government has allocated a grant of RM6 million to the Sarawak Bisaya Charitable Trust to develop commercial buffalo farming.
He added that the grant was approved by Abang Johari.
“The Premier has agreed to allocate funding in the form of a grant to the Sarawak Bisaya Charitable Trust for the proposed commercial buffalo farming initiative,” he said.
According to Awang Tengah, public participation is highly encouraged in supporting the state government’s initiative to make Limbang and Lawas buffalo production hubs.
He also hopes that the Sarawak Bisaya Charitable Trust will organise the implementation of the plan to help drive economic activities for the local population.
