MIRI: A quiet evening was shattered by an explosion when a high-heat gas cylinder blew up during welding work at a house along Jalan Dato Permaisuri, leaving a man injured yesterday (Jul 8).

The blast at around 6.45 pm, was believed to have been caused when the 34-year-old was cutting a cylinder valve using a gas welding tool.

However, the victim had already been taken to hospital by his family members before the rescuers arrived. The extent of his injuries was not known.

The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said firefighters from Lutong and Lopeng stations were dispatched to the scene, about 17km away, following an emergency call.

No fire was reported but they conducted safety checks to ensure the situation was safe.
