KUCHING: Mayor of Kuching South City Council (MBKS), Datuk Wee Hong Seng has strongly refuted recent allegations that MBKS failed to carry out its duties, particularly concerning a drainage project at Lorong Kedandi 2.
While speaking to the media, Wee addressed claims circulating on social media that someone had secured federal funding for the drainage works independently after the council allegedly neglected the issue.
“Let’s be clear, MBKS has never shirked its responsibilities.
“When credit is due, we give it, but don’t mislead the public into thinking MBKS failed, or that others single-handedly secured federal aid,” he said.
He explained that the drainage project was, in fact, part of a formal funding application submitted by MBKS to the federal government earlier this year.
“This project was submitted to the federal authorities on January 3 as part of our 2025 funding proposal. It was not a sudden or personal initiative,” he said.
According to Wee, MBKS had applied for 41 projects under its annual Budget Proposal (BP) submission, amounting to over RM9 million.
Of that, RM1 million was approved, with the Kedandi drainage upgrade among the priority projects listed.
“Documentation doesn’t lie. This is the proper process. You apply, you justify the need, you follow protocol,” he said.
Wee criticised those who claimed credit for the project by saying they had directly contacted a federal minister.
“If anyone can just call a minister and get money without knowing the scope or budget of a project, what’s the point of YBs and councils?
“Shouldn’t they ask what the actual scope is, how much funding is involved, and who’s really implementing it?” he questioned.
He said that these were not personal funds or political tokens.
“These are allocations meant for infrastructure – drainage, repairs, public works. These are the people’s funds, not campaign assets,” he stressed.
Wee added that MBKS remains committed to transparency and cooperation.
“If you get funding, let us know. We’ll support it. But don’t hijack ongoing efforts and claim sole credit,” he said.
He also called for all leaders to work collectively for the good of Sarawak.
“If you truly love Sarawak, show it through service, not through spin,” he said.
Addressing the broader public, Wee reaffirmed that MBKS has always been present and responsive.
“We have never turned our backs on the people, but don’t accuse us of inaction when we are the ones quietly doing the groundwork,” he said.
