BINTULU: PTT Exploration and Production Public Company Ltd (PTTEP) Malaysia has launched its first Community Development Programme (CDP) in Sarawak, the Hydro Sprout Initiative, aimed at promoting sustainable agriculture and uplifting B40 communities in Bintulu.

The three-year initiative, officially launched on Thursday, focuses on modern hydroponic farming methods while equipping local participants with technical skills, entrepreneurship training, and improved access to food security.

PTTEP Malaysia Country Manager, Padsakorn Suwanruji, said the programme is a collaborative effort between PTTEP Malaysia, Bintulu Development Authority (BDA), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Sarawak, and Lions Club International.

“To date, 10 individuals from the Bintulu community have been selected to undergo hands-on training in hydroponic techniques.

“The participants have successfully germinated and planted a variety of crops, with the first harvest expected later this month,” he said.

He added that in addition, they will receive business and marketing training to help them commercialise their produce.

“We began this journey by asking how we could truly make a difference.

“The Hydro Sprout Initiative does just that by introducing sustainable farming to B40 communities, strengthening food security, and equipping them with the tools to stand on their own through entrepreneurship,” he stated.

He added that the partnership with local agencies and institutions brought together vital expertise and resources to create an impactful and sustainable model for hydroponic farming and community empowerment in Bintulu.

“These initiatives reflect our broader commitment to environmental stewardship, from reducing our carbon footprint and preserving biodiversity, to encouraging responsible waste management in Malaysia.

“This initiative is not just about hydroponics, tree-planting or recycling.

“It’s about building resilience and creating long-term socioeconomic growth for the people and environment of Bintulu,” he emphasised.

Meanwhile, BDA General Manager, Datuk Muhamad Yakup Kari, expressed pride in the joint effort to transform land, knowledge, and community spirit into a sustainable future for Bintulu.

In conjunction with the launch, PTTEP also rolled out its environmental CSR campaign themed ‘Nourish Nature, Nurture Future’.

Organised in collaboration with BDA, UPM Sarawak, the Department of Environment (DOE) Bintulu, the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) Sarawak, and e-Concern (M) Sdn Bhd, the campaign comprises two core activities: the planting of 500 trees within the BDA Public Library grounds and an e-waste collection drive to promote proper disposal of used electronics

PTTEP is the exploration and production flagship of Thailand’s national oil company, PTT Group, with more than 50 projects globally.
