KOTA SAMARAHAN: A total of RM9,774 worth of counterfeit watches were seized during an enforcement operation conducted by the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) Sarawak earlier this week.
The raid, which took place on July 9 around noon, targeted a business premises following a complaint lodged by the trademark owner.
Seven enforcement officers from the Ministry, accompanied by the trademark holder, inspected the outlet here and uncovered the fake timepieces.
KPDN Sarawak’s Director, Matthew Dominic Barin, said legal action was taken under Section 102 (1) (C) of the Trademarks Act 2019 for possession, custody, or control of counterfeit goods for the purpose of trade or manufacturing.
“The ministry acted swiftly to prevent such imitation goods from reaching consumers. This is part of our ongoing efforts to safeguard consumer rights and protect intellectual property,” he said in a statement.
Individuals convicted of the offence may be fined up to RM10,000 or sentenced to imprisonment for a term not exceeding three years, or both.
For repeat offenders, the fine may increase to a maximum of RM20,000.
In the case of companies, those found guilty may be fined up to RM15,000, with subsequent offences carrying a heavier penalty of up to RM30,000.
KPDN Sarawak reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with trademark owners and relevant agencies to protect the local market from counterfeit products.
Meanwhile, traders and distributors have been urged to comply with existing regulations to avoid stern action.
