SRI AMAN: A total of 76 human deaths due to rabies have been recorded in Sarawak from July 2017 to March 2025, says Sri Aman District Council (MDSA) Secretary Mohd Rizal Zakaria.

He reminded the public not to become complacent despite no new deaths being reported this year.

“In 2024 alone, 123 out of 889 animal samples tested were confirmed positive for rabies, including four cases in Sri Aman,” he said during the 2025 Stray Animal Management Campaign at the Sri Aman Culture Centre here today (Jul 14).

The campaign was officiated by MDSA deputy chairman Balean Suji Inggol.

In his officiating speech, Balean stressed that rabies is a dangerous zoonotic disease that can be fatal if not treated promptly.

“Prevention is better than cure. Make sure pets are vaccinated regularly, not left to roam unsupervised, and report any bites or animals showing rabies symptoms to the authorities immediately,” he urged.

The campaign featured a rabies awareness talk by a veterinary expert, health and licensing exhibition counters by MDSA, and a children’s colouring competition themed around rabies awareness.
