KUALA LUMPUR:  Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, yesterday (Monday) chaired the National Council Meeting of the Islamic Welfare Organisation of Malaysia (PERKIM) for the first time since assuming the organisation’s top leadership post.

He was welcomed upon arrival by the vice presidents of PERKIM, led by Datuk Seri Dr Shahidan Kassim.

Abang Johari was appointed president of PERKIM during the organisation’s 64th Annual General Meeting held in Bangi, Selangor in May this year.

PERKIM, officially registered on August 19, 1960, has long held the vision of becoming an internationally recognised Islamic non-governmental organisation (NGO) in the field of dakwah (Islamic outreach). Its mission is to serve as a premier NGO supporting Islamic institutions both locally and globally.

Abang Johari has emphasised the need to strengthen PERKIM’s administrative structure while calling for more sustainable, impactful, and relevant programmes that meet the needs of the modern era. Also present at the meeting today (July 14) were Deputy Minister of Economy, Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib, and Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Coordinator for Regional Development Agencies, DBKU and Islamic Affairs).
