KUCHING: Sarawak has taken a bold step towards becoming a regional leader in healthcare safety with the successful implementation of the state’s first-ever Professional Healthcare Facility Fire Safety Management Training, recently held at Sarawak General Hospital (SGH).

The milestone programme brought together 135 participants from various healthcare disciplines across the state including doctors, assistant medical officers (AMOs), nurses, environmental health officers (EHOs), private hospital safety coordinators, and safety personnel from concession companies.
Jointly organised by SGH’s AMO Supervisory Unit and OSH Unit, the training was supported by the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) Sarawak, Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Sarawak Headquarters, Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak, and One Medicare Sdn Bhd (OMSB).
Participants underwent comprehensive fire safety training, including emergency preparedness, incident response, legal compliance, and hands-on fire drills.
Discussions also centred on long-term fire safety planning for healthcare facilities across Sarawak.
The initiative emphasise SGH’s and Sarawak’s broader commitment to embedding a robust culture of safety within the healthcare sector not just for the state, but for Malaysia and the wider Southeast Asian region.
With increasing focus on healthcare infrastructure resilience, this pioneering programme signals Sarawak’s readiness to set new benchmarks in hospital safety management, laying the foundation for its role as a Healthcare Safety Hub in the region.
