KUCHING: SatuBorneo Sdn Bhd (SBSB), a Sarawak-based offshore support and marine services company, and Cornerstone Offshore Pte Ltd (COS), a Singapore-based and Malaysia-headquartered subsea services company, have entered into a strategic collaboration to enhance integrated offshore services in Malaysia.

This partnership marks a significant milestone in enhancing the adoption and innovation of Mini Remotely-Operated-Vehicle (mROV) technologies and subsea services in East Malaysia, particularly in Sarawak waters.

It also brings together the strengths of both companies to meet the growing regional demand for platform-based and small craft-based mROV operations as offshore asset operators seek more agile, efficient, and cost-effective solutions for subsea inspection and maintenance.

Under this partnership, Cornerstone Offshore will provide advanced technical support, operational expertise and proven deployment strategies for mROV-based underwater inspection, utilising state-of-the-art compact ROV and AUV Systems.

SatuBorneo Sdn Bhd, on the other hand, will leverage its strong local presence, regulatory know-how and operational infrastructure in Sarawak to deploy and support the execution of mROV inspection programs aligned with client and authority requirements.

The partnership will deliver mROV technology with significant advantages, including rapid mobilisation, cost-effective deployment, enhanced safety, and high-resolution data acquisition, all of which are essential for extending the lifecycle of offshore assets.

This aligns with Sarawak’s broader economic and industrial agenda by strengthening local participation in high-technology subsea operations, in support of Petros, Petronas and Sarawak’s vendor development and localisation initiatives.

The collaboration will also focus on promoting knowledge transfer and capability building through targeted training programmes, joint operations, and technology demonstration projects.

In addition, the partnership seeks to optimise asset utilisation by reducing reliance on larger DP (Dynamic Positioning) vessels for routine inspection tasks.

Instead, the use of smaller craft and platform-based deployment models will be prioritised for such scopes, reserving larger DP vessels for more complex maintenance and repair operations. This approach not only improves cost efficiency but also aligns with sustainable offshore asset management practices.

“This partnership with Cornerstone Offshore marks a new chapter for SBSB in delivering advanced inspection services to our clients.

“We are confident this will enhance our service offerings while creating new opportunities for Sarawakian talent in the offshore sector,” said SatuBorneo Sdn Bhd Managing Director George Melati.

Cornerstone Offshore Managing Director Philip Sim commented: “We are proud to formalise this collaboration with SatuBorneo. Together, we will redefine how underwater inspection is performed in Sarawak’s offshore fields, making it smarter, faster, and more cost-efficient.

“This is not just a technology deployment, but a commitment to developing local capabilities and supporting the future of offshore operations in East Malaysia.”

Both parties are committed to a phased rollout of operations, starting with pilot projects and capability demonstrations across selected offshore platforms in 2025.

The results from these initiatives will form the basis for long-term service delivery and broader industry applications.

This strategic collaboration is a testament to the shared vision of SBSB and COS to deliver innovative, safe, and sustainable underwater solutions while supporting Malaysia’s upstream energy ambitions.
