KUCHING: The 722 Walk, held in conjunction with Sarawak Day, is more than just a walk, it is a statement of unity and a reflection of the shared love Sarawakians have for the state they call home.

Having said this, Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng expressed his appreciation to Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) and Padawan Municipal Council (PMC) for standing together with MBKS to organise the event.

Wee said the collaboration is proof that when everyone sets aside their differences and works together, they can achieve something greater for the people.

“This idea of a united 722 Walk was something I envisioned from the beginning, all three councils walking side by side as Anak Sarawak, united in purpose and spirit. Today, we have made that vision a reality.

“And while DBKU will take the lead as host next year, we must remember that it is not about positions or organisers. The 722 Walk belongs to every Sarawakian. It belongs to all of us,” he said in his speech during the flag-off ceremony for the 722 Walk at the MBKS compound here today (July 22).

Wee added that the significance of 722 goes beyond just a date on the calendar, as it reminds Sarawakians of the day the state took a bold step forward in shaping its destiny.

“It is a reminder of our rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), of our special position within this Federation, and of our responsibility to protect and uphold them for the generations to come.

“Let us not allow 722 to be reduced to a mere ritual or celebration. It must remain a call to action for all Sarawakians to stay united, to cherish our diversity, and to continue working together for a stronger and more prosperous Sarawak,” he added.
Meanwhile, a total of 1,000 proud Sarawakians participated in the walk, comprising contingents from the three councils.

The four-kilometre walk, which began at the MBKS compound at 6 am, ended at the Kuching Waterfront with the state flag-raising ceremony at Dataran Ibu Pertiwi.

A symbolic handing-over ceremony also took place at Dataran Ibu Pertiwi, from MBKS to DBKU, signifying that DBKU will host next year’s 722 Walk.
