KUALA LUMPUR: Cahya Mata Cement Sdn Bhd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Cahya Mata Sarawak Bhd (Cahya Mata), inked a contract with Sinoma Industry Engineering (M) Sdn Bhd to construct a new 6,000-tonnes-per-day clinker line at its Mambong Integrated Plant in Kuching.

Sinoma Industry Engineering, a subsidiary of China’s Tianjin Cement Industry Design and Research Institute (TCDRI), has been appointed as the Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Commissioning (EPCC) contractor for the project.

The signing ceremony was held at Cahya Mata’s office in Menara Darussalam, Kuala Lumpur, with representatives from both companies in attendance.

This contract signing marks a major milestone in Cahya Mata Cement’s growth roadmap, following recent approval from the Sarawak Planning Authority (SPA).

The RM673 million project is slated for completion in 21 months and is expected to more than double Cahya Mata Cement’s annual clinker capacity—from 900,000 metric tonnes to 1.9 million metric tonnes.

The expansion aims to improve cost efficiency and eliminate the need for imported clinker, significantly reducing the company’s carbon footprint.

Cahya Mata Group managing director Datuk Seri Sulaiman Abdul Rahman Taib said the Mambong Clinker Line 2 is a key step in strengthening Sarawak’s cement supply chain, boosting capacity, reducing import reliance, and ensuring they can meet future demand reliably.

“Beyond production, it reflects Cahya Mata’s commitment to building a modern facility that positions us as possibly the greenest cement producer in the region,” he said.

The new facility will be equipped with advanced technologies to enhance environmental performance and energy efficiency. These include a waste heat recovery system capable of generating up to 6MW of power and a dust filtration system designed to reduce emissions to more than half the current regulatory limit.

Clinker Line 2 will also incorporate high-efficiency equipment to reduce energy usage and carbon emissions. Locally sourced alternative raw materials and fuels will be used to further cut reliance on fossil fuels.

At peak construction, the project is expected to create up to 500 jobs and generate economic spin-offs for businesses in Padawan and Kuching.
