HUAWEI has officially launched its latest flagship smartphone line, the Pura 80 series, in Malaysia.
While the full range is available in China, the local release includes only the Huawei Pura 80 Pro and Pura 80 Ultra – both showcasing impressive imaging capabilities, including an industry-first dual telephoto lens system offering up to 9.4x optical zoom.
Design-wise, the Pura 80 series stands out with a distinctive triangular-shaped camera island that Huawei refers to as the Dazzling Forward Symbol.
Both models are IP69-rated for water resistance and come equipped with the AI Smart Controls Button. This multifunctional button can be customised for quick access to features such as the camera, torch, or AI lens, and also serves as a fingerprint scanner.
The Pura 80 Pro is available in three elegant colourways: Glazed Red, Glazed White, and Glazed Black. Both the Pro and Ultra models feature a 6.8-inch LTPO OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, a resolution of 2848×1276, and a peak brightness of 3,000 nits.
The screen of the Pura 80 Pro is protected by Huawei’s second-generation Kunlun Glass, which the brand claims is 20 times tougher than standard glass.
Powering the series is Huawei’s own Kirin 9020 chipset, the same processor found in the Mate X6 foldable. The Pura 80 Pro comes with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, offering ample power for multitasking and media use.
When it comes to photography, Huawei has once again pushed the boundaries. Both the Pura 80 Pro and Ultra share the same main, ultra-wide, and selfie cameras.
The main camera is a 50MP sensor with a variable aperture ranging from f/1.6 to f/4.0 and features a 1-inch sensor.
Huawei highlights its dynamic range, rated at 16EV, which it claims is 15 times higher than that of conventional smartphones and almost on par with professional cinema cameras, which reach around 16.5EV.
The ultra-wide-angle camera is a 40MP lens with an f/2.2 aperture, delivering crisp, expansive shots. For selfies, both models come with a 13MP front-facing camera.
The Pura 80 Pro’s telephoto camera features a 48MP sensor with an f/2.1 lens, offering 4x optical zoom and the ability to take macro shots from as close as 5cm.
Battery performance is equally robust, with a 5,170mAh cell capable of 100W wired charging via USB-C and 80W wireless charging. Both phones run on Huawei’s EMUI 15.0, based on HarmonyOS.
The Huawei Pura 80 Ultra is available in two premium finishes: Prestige Gold and Golden Black. Its screen is protected by second-generation Crystal Armor Kunlun Glass, which reportedly provides 16 times greater scratch resistance and 25 times better drop protection compared to its predecessor.
While the Ultra shares the same primary cameras as the Pro model, it distinguishes itself with its dual-lens telephoto system – a first in the smartphone industry.
This innovative setup includes a 50MP 1/1.28-inch sensor, paired with two separate lenses: an f/2.4 lens that delivers 3.7x optical zoom, and an f/2.6 lens capable of zooming up to 9.4x optically.
The only trade-off is a slightly more prominent camera bump, a small price to pay for such advanced optics.
