JAKARTA: Sarawak continues to strengthen its position in regional cooperation through several key agreements signed during the 13th Malaysia-Indonesia Annual Consultation held here today (July 29).

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg described the agreements as a significant milestone in enhancing economic and energy ties between Sarawak and West Kalimantan.

“I would like to express my deepest appreciation to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto for the agreements reached, particularly those that serve Sarawak’s interests,” he was quoted as saying in a TVS report after attending a joint press conference with Anwar at the ASEAN Secretariat.

One of the main agreements reached was the implementation of a free trade arrangement between the border posts of Entikong, West Kalimantan, and Tebedu, Sarawak.

Abang Johari said the initiative would facilitate the smoother flow of goods and services between the two regions.

“This is a major step forward in strengthening business networks between Sarawak and West Kalimantan,” he added.

He said the implementation of free trade is expected to stimulate economic growth in the border areas and promote cross-border cooperation in the logistics and trade sectors.

Earlier, Abang Johari accompanied Anwar on a working visit to Istana Merdeka for a special meeting with President Prabowo Subianto, followed by a visit to the ASEAN Secretariat, where Anwar delivered a keynote address in conjunction with Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025.

Also part of the Malaysian delegation were Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor and Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.
