MOSCOW: A volcano in Russia’s Kamchatka region has erupted for the first time since 1550, just days after one of the strongest earthquakes on record struck the area.

The Krasheninnikov volcano sent a plume of ash 6,000 metres into the sky, according to Kamchatka’s emergency ministry.

No populated areas lie in its path and no ashfall has been reported. Authorities issued an “orange” aviation warning, signalling potential flight disruptions.

The eruption follows last Wednesday’s 8.8-magnitude quake off Petropavlovsk, which triggered tsunami alerts across the Pacific and caused widespread evacuations.

In Russia, waves hit Severo-Kurilsk, submerging a fishing plant.

Klyuchevskoy, the tallest active volcano in Europe and Asia, also erupted last week — its 18th eruption since 2000, according to the Smithsonian’s Global Volcanism Programme. – AFP
