KUCHING: Smokers lurking in no-smoking zones around the city found themselves slapped with hefty notices as health officers launched an enforcement operation on Monday, catching 25 offenders in the act.

The Kuching Divisional Health Office (PKB) said their enforcement team swooped in on several public areas — including MJC, Pine Square, and Emart Batu Kawa — as part of a coordinated operation targeting illegal smoking.

Backed by 13 personnel, a team of 15 authorised officers from PKB’s Inspectorate and Legal Unit took to the ground, leaving no cigarette butt unchecked.

“Our followers’ voices are heard. Morning, noon, evening or night — we will keep enforcing the law. Speak up for your right to clean air in the comments,” the office said in its Facebook post.

PKB assured that this was not a one-off effort, adding that more spot checks would be carried out throughout the city to remind smokers that public health laws are not optional.

The operation not only aims to protect non-smokers from second-hand smoke but also to stop unhealthy habits before they spiral into serious diseases.

In light of this, the public is urged to embrace healthier lifestyles and work together in keeping the air clean — because everyone deserves to breathe safely.
