Man fined RM2,900 over syabu possession

KUCHING: A local man was fined RM2,900 or in default six months’ prison by the Magistrates Court for possessing 0.04g of syabu five years ago.

Roney Mang, 38, from Kampung Batu Gong, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan to a charge read to him by a court interpreter.

He was charged under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 12(3) of the same Act for possessing 0.04g of methamphetamine.

If convicted, he could face a maximum fine of RM100,000 or imprisonment of up to five years.

The offence was committed at around 10.20 am on October 22, 2020, in front of a house in Kampung Siburan.

Based on the case facts, a police team had arrested Roney in front of a house on suspicion of involvement in drug-related activity.

Inspections found a plastic packet containing crystalline substance believed to be syabu inside a sling bag belonging to him.

A report from the Chemistry Department confirmed that the substance was 0.04g of methamphetamine.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Asmawi Nur Haqim Mokhtar prosecuted, while Roney was unrepresented by counsel.
