KUCHING: Firefighters here battled a blaze and carried out about 12 hours of overhaul works at a factory in Muara Tabuan Light Industrial Park early yesterday morning.

The firemen had to dig deep into their reserves to control the flames following the blaze, which was reported at 10.48 am yesterday.

Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Sarawak said firefighters from the Tabuan Jaya, Padungan and Batu Lintang stations arrived promptly at the scene following an emergency call.

“The fire started from several containers converted into temporary workers’ quarters before spreading to the rear section of the factory, where goods for a supermarket were packed and stored.

“The rear section, measuring 100 by 100 square feet, was 70 per cent destroyed,” it said in a statement today.

It added that the fire was brought under control at 12.19 pm yesterday, but firefighters remained on site for extensive overhaul works, including extinguishing smouldering piles of goods under the collapsed factory structure with the help of bulldozers.

“Firefighting efforts managed to prevent the fire from spreading to four adjacent factory premises,” it said, while adding that the operation ended at 12.50 am today.

A total of 37 personnel were involved in the operation, supported by the Royal Malaysia Police (RMP), Kuching South City Council (MBKS) led by its Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng, SESCO and the Civil Defence Force.

No casualties were reported.
