SIBU: A total of 130 participants consisting of doctors, nurses and health personnel from hospitals and clinics throughout Sarawak attended the Infectious Disease Update 2025 programme organised by the Infectious Disease Unit (IDU) of Sibu Hospital at a prominent hotel here today.

Sibu Hospital director, Dr Nanthakumar Thirunavukkarasu said the programme was one of the biggest events ever organised by the unit, especially outside the hospital premises.

“This programme is very relevant to our daily practices, especially in Sibu and Sarawak in general.

“Infectious diseases in the central region are very different, and there are even cases involving patients infected with two diseases at the same time such as leptospirosis and melioidosis, or dengue and malaria,” he said during the launching ceremony.

“Exposure such as this is very important to increase understanding and compliance in treatment, especially among HIV patients, in addition to strengthening infection control practices.

“You will see these types of infectious diseases in your daily practice, and one of the main aspects we are emphasising today is infection control practices,” he said when addressing the participants, who are mostly in the health sector.

He also thanked all the participants who were willing to spare their time over the weekend to join the programme.

“We will be discussing various topics, so take the opportunity to ask questions and learn from the speakers.

“It is important to create good interactions so that you can learn and then apply that knowledge in your own practice,” Dr Nanthakumar added.
