KUCHING: ES Sunlogy Bhd has partnered with Sarawak-based Planet QEOS Sdn Bhd to develop a 155 megawatt-peak (MWp) solar hybrid power plant in the Special Energy Zone (SEZ) in Baram, northern Sarawak.

The facility, to be located in Long Lama, will incorporate a 310 megawatt-hour (MWh) battery energy storage system (BESS).

Both companies signed a heads of agreement (HOA) during the launch of the Sarawak Energy Transition Policy (SET-P) by Premier Tan Sri Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg on Monday.

ES Sunlogy, a mechanical and electrical (M&E) engineering and renewable energy provider, will hold a 40 per cent stake in the consortium, while deep-tech firm Planet QEOS will own 60 per cent.

The latter recently received in-principle state approval for its integrated agrovoltaic and renewable energy proposal in Baram, which targets up to 4,000 MWac of solar capacity over 1,200 hectares.

The project also includes a 180km transmission corridor — repurposing the former Sabah–Sarawak gas pipeline — to channel green energy to downstream industrial zones in Bintulu.

It forms part of Phase 1 of the Baram DeepTech Energy Programme, which aims to deliver 500 MWac of firm renewable energy to the Sarawak Energy Bhd grid by 2027.

This will be supported by 1,850 MWp of solar PV capacity and 3,677 MWh of battery storage, potentially creating the world’s largest single-site BESS-based solar system with a 60 per cent capacity factor.

Beyond energy generation, the initiative will power the SEZ’s integrated agrovoltaic ecosystem, creating thousands of jobs in engineering, agriculture and clean energy services.

ES Sunlogy will also set up an M&E engineering facility in Baram as a regional hub for technical training and knowledge transfer.

Managing director Khor Chuan Meng said the Baram SEZ marks a flagship project in Malaysia’s green industrialisation push, supporting the National Energy Transition Roadmap and the 40 per cent renewable energy target by 2035.
