SARATOK: Saratok has the potential to produce more talented boxers through the active role of the Joseph Harry Boxing Club (JHBC), says Kalaka Assemblyman Mohamad Duri.

Formerly known as the Saratok Boxing Academy (SBA), the club has trained primary and secondary school students as well as youths since 1998 under coach Joseph Harry at SMK Bahasa Malaysia Saratok.

“This effort not only uncovers new talent but also has the potential to raise Saratok’s name at state and national levels in boxing,” Mohamad said after meeting club representatives on Friday.

He noted boxing has brought many medals to Sarawak, making the sport an asset worth developing.

During the meeting, Mohamad was briefed on the club’s plans and recent results at the National Youth and Junior Boxing Championships held in Sibu from Jun 23–28.

Jackson Daniel Dom, 17, won gold in the 54kg category, while Lemuel Merupi Salim, 16, and Jamelia Sumang Jason, 16, each took silver in the 52kg and 54kg categories respectively.

The boxers will next compete at the 4th Sarawak Open Boxing Championships in Sri Aman from August 19-23, with a total of eleven athletes representing the club.
