BINTULU: The Ministry of Public Health, Housing and Local Government (MPHLG) will implement an affordable housing project in Bintulu to address the high demand for more reasonably priced homes.

Deputy Minister Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee said Bintulu is among the areas in Sarawak recording the highest demand for affordable housing, driven by rapid economic and industrial growth in the division.

“Bintulu holds a special position as Sarawak’s second energy hub. This factor has resulted in very high housing demand, which in turn has affected property prices, including low-cost houses.

“The ministry has taken note of this and we have identified a project site in Kidurong, with an initial proposal for around 100 affordable housing units. Further details will be announced soon.”

Tiang was speaking at a press conference during the handover of Occupation Permits (OPs) and keys to purchasers of the housing project at Lot 6256 and Lot 6258, Block 32, Kemena Land District, developed by Tiara Seni Sdn Bhd recently.

He said besides Bintulu, towns across Sarawak also face higher construction costs compared to Peninsular due to logistical challenges, building materials, and labour issues.

However, he noted that the situation in Bintulu is more pronounced as its strong economy attracts a workforce and investments, which in turn raises the cost of living and property values.

“The government has not overlooked Bintulu’s needs. This project is good news for the people as it reflects the government’s commitment to providing more affordable housing options.”

He added that the effort is in line with the Premier’s development strategy to position Bintulu as a major energy hub that will continue driving the state’s economic growth.
