KUCHING: A total of 102 foreigners were detained during an operation dubbed Ops Mahir, which targeted two construction sites around the city.

Sarawak Immigration Department said the foreigners were detained during the operation carried out by its Immigration Enforcement Division here at 1.30 pm yesterday, following public complaints and intelligence work by the division.

“About 215 individuals were inspected, with 102 of them detained for various immigration offences. Of the total, 86 were men while 16 were women and are currently being held at the Immigration Detention Depot pending further investigation.

“Those detained are suspected of committing offences under the Immigration Act 1959/63 and Immigration Regulations 1963,” it said in a statement posted in its Facebook.

The department further stressed that the operation reflected its strong commitment to upholding the nation’s laws and ensuring all foreign workers comply with the country’s regulations.

“Such enforcement efforts will continue regularly to curb violations of immigration laws,” it said.

The department warned that strict and uncompromising action would be taken against anyone found to breach immigration laws, while reminding the public not to harbour or employ illegal immigrants as it is also an offence.

“The public is urged to continue channelling information if they come across any suspicious activities,” it said.
