LUNDU: The Gunung Gading Fiesta 2025 reinforced Sarawak’s model of multicultural unity while showcasing its unique natural attractions and eco-tourism potential.

Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM) Minister, Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, said she was pleasantly surprised by the turnout of around 500 participants from diverse communities, including Selako, Malay, Iban, Chinese and Bidayuh.

“Seeing everyone gathered here shows true unity. Coincidentally, this event falls in the month of independence and truly reflects Sarawak’s long-standing reputation as a model of racial and religious harmony.

“As the late Tok Nan (Pehin Sri Adenan Satem) used to say, everyone eats together, works together, and It is very important to carry that spirit in our activities,” she said.

She said this in her speech when officiating the Gunung Gading 2025 Fiesta at Gunung Gading National Park here today.

Nancy, who is also Santubong Member of Parliament, added that the fiesta exposed the community to Gunung Gading’s natural beauty while encouraging young people to appreciate and preserve the environment.

“I invite everyone to help promote Santubong constituency tourism, especially Gunung Gading, known for its waterfalls, rich flora and fauna, and recreational opportunities.

“Earlier, we visited one, with six more waiting to be explored,” she added.

She also said that the fiesta also promotes a healthy lifestyle through activities like hiking and aerobics, while highlighting other areas as a key eco-tourism destination along with Teluk Melano and surrounding beaches.

“We also aim to raise awareness about environmental conservation. A popular activity here on Gunung Gading is viewing the Rafflesia; although it is not blooming at this time, it will bloom again at the end of the year, God-willing.

“Let’s work together to promote these tourist spots. Gunung Gading should be a top destination for recreation, education, and eco-tourism, while Santubong constituency can serve as a model for community unity.

“Happy Independence Day!” she said.

Today’s main activities include hiking and a photography contest focusing on flora and fauna using mobile phones, a mass aerobics session for all participants, children’s coloring contests, ‘Mari Mencoba’ Dart activities, lucky draws, exhibitions by government agencies, and a communal meal.

In conjunction with the 2025 National Day celebrations, the event was also enlivened with the waving of the ‘Jalur Gemilang’ and the ‘Ibu Pertiwi’ flags, accompanied by patriotic songs.

The programme was jointly organised with the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (Gunung Gading Lundu), Pusat Khidmat Rakyat P.193 Santubong, Tepian Gelanggang Kuching Sports and Recreation Club, and the Welfare and Family Club of the Sarawak Sports Commission.
