BINTULU: Sarawak is stepping up efforts to strengthen food security and establish itself as the Rice Bowl of Malaysia, with plans to modernise agriculture and boost productivity across the state.
Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom said investors and developers are playing a key role in transforming paddy cultivation and other agricultural projects.
He disclosed that 12 companies have expressed interest in participating in the state’s agricultural initiatives, providing hope for a more self-sufficient food supply.
“Food security is crucial. If we do not take action now, it will lead to serious supply challenges and continued high import-export deficits, which currently stand at about RM7.6 billion.
“Our goal is not only to increase paddy and rice production but to cover all agricultural products,” he told reporters when met at the Sarawak Agrofest here today (Aug 24).

He emphasised the ministry’s comprehensive approach, which covers research and development, seed production, maximising yields, and ensuring downstream marketing.
Rundi stressed the importance of creating a complete supply chain so farmers can sell their produce efficiently.
“Even if farmers grow large quantities, without proper marketing channels, it is useless. This is why our ministry policy focuses on complete supply chain integration, allowing anyone to participate, whether through contract farming or large-scale commercial operations,” he said.
Rundi also pointed out the social impact of the initiative, noting that transforming agriculture into a profitable, commercialised sector will benefit rural communities, especially those in the B40 income bracket.
By attracting younger, tech-savvy farmers, the state hopes to modernise its farming practices and compete with advanced agricultural countries.
As part of these efforts, the Department of Agriculture has recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Advansia (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd to produce high-quality MR 315 paddy seeds.
“This MoU symbolises our commitment to ensuring the best seeds, highest yields, and improved quality for local farmers,” Rundi said.
