IN the world of competitive sport, athletes often emerge from humble beginnings, carried forward by discipline, family support, and expert coaching.

One such rising star is Afif Darwysh Mohamad Nazir, a cyclist steadily making his name under the guidance of the Buceros Cycling Team, a Kuching-based team who champions on nurturing the growth of the community within the sport
Afif’s journey from a promising swimmer to one of Malaysia’s brightest young cyclists is a story of resilience and adaptation — a story of how raw potential, when carefully nurtured, can blossom into national promise.

From Swimming to Cycling: A Transition Driven by Potential

Afif’s athletic career began in the pool. By age 13, however, he took a bold leap that would shape his future — leaving swimming to pursue cycling.
For many, it seemed a surprising switch, but the Buceros team immediately recognised his natural physique and endurance.
“We saw that Afif had the right attributes, and with proper training, he could excel,” said Awang Zalani Awang Bujang, Team Principal of Buceros Cycling.
This was no casual change of sport. Cycling demanded new technical skills, tactical understanding, and a completely different kind of training discipline.
Afif immersed himself, starting with fundamentals: building core strength, cardiovascular endurance, and refining his pedalling technique.
Each session was tailored to prepare him for long-term progression.
By 16, he was already competing at a high level, consistently showing the kind of grit and natural aptitude that convinced coaches he could stand among the best.

The Buceros Philosophy: Training Meets Technology

A hallmark of the Buceros approach is its embrace of technology, and Afif’s development is an example of how data-driven methods can sharpen raw talent.
The team monitors performance through power meters, Wattbike Hub, and MyWhoosh software, capturing cadence, wattage, and recovery rates in real time.
This feedback enables coaches to adjust workloads, fine-tune tactics, and ensure Afif’s progress remains on track.
“This approach allows us to refine every aspect of Afif’s training. From technical skills to endurance and tactical awareness, these tools ensure he is always improving and performing at his best,” said Awang Zalani.
Alongside the numbers, Afif’s training includes race simulations and tactical drills. These sessions replicate competition pressure, sharpening his decision-making and situational awareness — qualities that separate good cyclists from great ones.
The Buceros philosophy goes beyond merely producing racers; it builds complete athletes. Nutrition, lifestyle, academic balance, and mental resilience are all considered as integral as time on the saddle.

Mind Over Muscle: The Mental Fortitude of a Champion

Physical ability alone cannot carry an athlete through the demands of elite cycling. For Afif, what distinguishes him is his composure.
“Afif has a rare combination of focus and calm under pressure.
“He executes race strategies with precision and maintains clarity even in high-stakes situations,” Awang Zalani said.
In races where split-second decisions determine the outcome, Afif’s ability to stay unshaken has given him an edge. Many young riders falter under pressure, but Afif’s steady mindset has already drawn praise from his coaches.
“Many young athletes get nervous before big races, but Afif’s mental fortitude is exceptional,” he added.
This ability to assess and react calmly — whether in a sprint finish or during tactical manoeuvres in the peloton — will prove invaluable as Afif steps onto bigger regional and international stages.

Precision Training for Peak Performance

Afif’s daily training is highly individualised, continuously adjusted based on upcoming races, recovery needs, and performance metrics.
Ahead of major competitions, he undergoes a carefully structured taper week, where training intensity is reduced to allow the body to recover fully while keeping the mind sharp.
“Before any major competition, we reduce Afif’s training load.
“His sessions may drop from an hour to 30 minutes, allowing his body to rest while maintaining focus and sharpness for race day,” explained Awang Zalani
Nutrition has also become non-negotiable.
Afif follows a strict diet designed to fuel endurance and recovery.
As Awang Zalani noted with pride: “He hasn’t eaten fried foods in two years.”
Such discipline, rare in teenagers, is a sign of his long-term commitment to the sport.
Whether sprinting, racing against the clock in time trials, or enduring long-distance events, Afif’s preparation ensures he arrives on the start line in peak condition.

Brains and Brawn: Balancing Academics and Athletics

At just 17, Afif faces not only the demands of elite sport but also the reality of schoolwork. Like many young athletes, he must balance the classroom with the racecourse.
“It’s a challenge, but Afif has shown remarkable commitment to both his education and his sport,” said Awang Zalani.
His daily routine is tightly scheduled: training sessions slotted between lessons, rest periods aligned with homework, and recovery balanced with revision.
The discipline required mirrors the rigour of competition itself, and Afif has embraced it fully.
This balancing act, though difficult, is laying the foundation for a life where focus and discipline become second nature — qualities essential both on the bike and beyond it.

Family Fuel and Community Backing

Behind Afif’s steady rise is an equally strong support system. His family rarely misses a race, providing encouragement that bolsters his confidence and motivation.
“The presence of his family at every race has been a major factor in his confidence and motivation,” said Awang Zalani.
Support also comes from local institutions like the Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC), which plays a role in helping young athletes balance academics and athletics.
This ecosystem of family, community, and structured programmes has provided Afif with stability, allowing him to focus wholly on progression.

Racing to Recognition: Early Achievements

Afif’s hard work has already begun to bear fruit. His performances in junior and national competitions have secured him a place in Malaysia’s national cycling programme — an achievement that not only validates his potential but also opens the door to advanced coaching and international exposure.
Each strong result has confirmed what his coaches already knew: Afif has the ability to translate training into results under real pressure. For a young cyclist, this consistency is a key marker of readiness for greater challenges.

Eyes on the Prize: Ambitious Goals

Afif’s ambitions stretch far beyond national races. His immediate goals include competing in the Southeast Asia (SEA) Games and targeting the Asian Junior and Elite Championships.
In the long term, he aims to establish himself as one of Asia’s best cyclists — and perhaps even push beyond continental competition.
“Afif’s potential is boundless. With the right guidance and support, he will achieve great things in cycling,” said Awang Zalani.
For Afif, the path ahead is clear: discipline, consistency, and steady improvement — the same qualities that have carried him from the swimming pool to the saddle.

On Track for Greatness

At just 17, Afif stands at the threshold of something remarkable. His story is about more than medals and finish lines — it is about the combination of talent, science, discipline, and support that creates champions.
From his swimming days to his first national podium, from training sessions monitored by technology to the cheers of his family at the roadside, every element has contributed to shaping him into an athlete capable of carrying Malaysia’s hopes.
His journey is still unfolding, but one thing is already certain: Afif is pedalling towards greatness, and in doing so, he is inspiring a new generation of Malaysian athletes to believe in the power of dedication.
