KUCHING: Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department deputy director (Investigation/Legal) Datuk Mohamad Zainal Abdullah is expected to assume the role of Sarawak Police Commissioner from Datuk Mancha Ata, who will retire later this month.
According to several postings, including on Mohamad Zainal’s Facebook page, the appointment will take effect immediately after Mancha’s retirement.
He described the appointment as an opportunity to serve once again in his home state after nearly 30 years of pursuing education and service in Peninsular Malaysia.
“Alhamdulillah, it is now time to serve in my birthplace after nearly 30 years away in Peninsular Malaysia, for studies and work.
“Thank you to the leadership for entrusting me with the responsibility of leading Sarawak, InsyaAllah,” he said in a Facebook post.
For now, the official appointment ceremony has yet to be held, pending an announcement from the police.
Mohamad Zainal has extensive experience in criminal investigation and law enforcement at the national level.
He is well-regarded for his effectiveness in tackling organised crime, smuggling and drug trafficking activities.
At Bukit Aman, he has led several key operations and focused on developing comprehensive security policies, including crime management, community protection and officer training.
Meanwhile, Mancha also made history as the first Dayak to be appointed Sarawak Police Commissioner, succeeding Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri, who was transferred to Bukit Aman in 2023.
Prior to that, Mancha had served as Sarawak Deputy Police Commissioner, a position he held since June 9, 2021.
He also previously held several key posts in the Royal Malaysia Police (RMP), including Commander of the General Operations Force (GOF) Sarawak Brigade.
