BINTULU: Sarawak’s industrial hub status has been further strengthened with Sakura Ferroalloys Sdn Bhd investing over US$113 million (RM487.5 million) in two major projects at Samalaju Industrial Park.
Deputy Minister for International Trade, Industry and Investment Datuk Dr Malcolm Mussen Lamoh, who officiated at the groundbreaking of a new refined ferromanganese facility and the opening of the company’s Sinter Plant, said the expansion showed investors’ confidence in Sarawak’s industrial ecosystem.
“The expansion reflected strong investor confidence in Sarawak’s potential, while creating high-value employment opportunities and strengthening the state’s industrial ecosystem,” he said, as reported by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas).
He praised Sakura for achieving over four million man-hours without a lost-time injury, describing it as a reflection of a strong workplace safety culture.
He also acknowledged the company’s commitment to sustainability despite operating in a high-impact sector.
The new converter project, valued at US$82.5 million (RM346.5 million), will enable Sakura to produce medium and low-carbon ferromanganese, with construction scheduled for completion by 2027.
Meanwhile, the US$31 million (RM141 million) Sinter Plant is expected to enhance production efficiency and stability, reinforcing Sakura’s role as a leading ferroalloys producer in the region.
