JAKARTA: A 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck Nabire regency in Central Papua province early Friday, sending residents fleeing their homes.

The tremor, which lasted two to three seconds, caused no reported casualties, National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) spokesperson Abdul Muhari said.

“Some homes were damaged, glass shattered at airport facilities, ceilings collapsed at the government’s office, a bridge was destroyed, and electricity and telecommunications were disrupted,” he said in a statement.

Rapid Response Team members from the Nabire Regency Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) remain on site to assess the full impact.

BNPB urged residents to remain vigilant for possible aftershocks and to ensure their homes are safe before returning, while also warning against believing or sharing rumours on social media.

Data from the Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) showed the quake struck at 1.19 am Western Indonesia time, with an epicentre 29 kilometres northwest of Nabire at a depth of 24 kilometres.

The quake did not pose a tsunami risk, the agency added. – Bernama
