KUCHING: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has won the 2025 JCI Malaysia Sustainable Development Award (JCIM SDA) under Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12: Responsible Consumption and Production for its Bank Sampah project.
The project, which rewards households for recycling, was recognised for its creative approach to reducing waste and encouraging environmental responsibility by turning recyclables into valuable resources.
MBKS was among 30 finalists nationwide, with two projects nominated namely Bank Sampah and the Kuching Natural Farmers’ Market. The Bank Sampah initiative ultimately clinched the award.
This latest recognition adds to MBKS’s strong track record at the JCIM SDA, with past wins including 2020: IPeople/Qmunity App (SDG 11), 2021: Let’s Recycle Together (SDG 12), 2023: Upgrading of Traffic Garden & Kenyalang Park Open Spaces (SDG 11) and 2024: iBuyBack App (SDG 11)
MBKS Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng commended his councillors and staff for their dedication.
“This achievement reflects the passion and commitment of our MBKS family in building a cleaner, greener and more sustainable Kuching South,” said Wee.
The award ceremony took place last night (Sept 21) and was officiated by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, representing Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
