No stopping Sarawak’s medal storm in athletics

KUCHING: Sarawak continued its gold medal spree in athletics at the Borneo Games Kuching 2025 with a series of dominant performances.

In the men’s 5,000m race walk, Sarawak swept the podium as Mohamad Farish Yazid Mohamad Yasdie clinched gold in 27:21.39, followed by Muhamad Niq Aizad Mohamad Asrof with silver in 27:21.39, and Eldysean Luyoh Edwin securing bronze in 30:17.56.

The women’s shot put final also saw a clean sweep for Sarawak.

Voon Pei Ling took gold with a throw of 11.27m, ahead of Ng Jing Jun (10.91m) and Tiffany Correnny Naen Berain (10.60m).

However, Sarawak had to settle for silver in the women’s 800m final, where Clezendra Chanda Cevester Empari clocked 2:18.20 to finish just behind Sabah’s Hizillawanty Jamain, who won gold in 2:18.20.

Catherine Indun Beji placed third with 2:34.63.

In the men’s javelin throw, Sarawak once again dominated the field. Freddy Ato secured gold with 50.45m, edging out teammate Desmond Wei Xiong Jong (49.97m), while Bronster Henry completed the sweep with 45.71m.

The men’s 800m final was a tightly contested race, with Sarawak’s Danial Hakim Mohammed Omar prevailing in 1:58.55.

Labuan’s Mohammad Nafiq Hussin claimed silver with 1:59.24, while Brunei Darussalam’s Kasyful Asymawi Khairul Arifin settled for bronze in 1:59.33.
