KUCHING: Community participation is the backbone of environmental sustainability, and a cleaner, healthier Sarawak begins with each person taking responsibility for their surroundings, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.

He made the call when officiating the Malaysia Cleanup Day 2025: Nationwide Mega Cleaning Programme held in conjunction with World Cleanup Day 2025 on Saturday, with the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) leading the local initiative.

Dr Sim commended the active involvement of local communities, schools and civil society groups, stressing that “environmental stewardship requires long-term commitment and creative approaches”.

“I encourage all councils to continue engaging communities and schools to build a cleaner, greener Sarawak for future generations in line with the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030’s sustainable environment,” he said.

The Federal Cabinet has designated the last Saturday of September each year as ‘Hari Cuci Malaysia’, a nationwide campaign aimed at cleaning public areas and neighbourhoods, closing illegal dumpsites, promoting recycling, and reducing single-use plastics.

This year’s campaign targets a Malaysia Book of Records milestone with 100,000 participants nationwide joining simultaneous cleanup efforts.

In Kuching South, more than 500 people took part, covering areas including Kampung Lumba Kuda, Jalan Mendu, Jalan Padungan, Jalan Petanak, Jalan Blacksmith, Jalan Central Timur and Jalan Abg Abdul Rahim.
