PADAWAN: The traditional handicrafts of the Bidayuh community should be elevated as both a cultural heritage asset and an economic potential for the local community.
Deputy Transport (Aviation and Road) Minister, Datuk Dr Jerip Susil said this not only preserves the inherited artistic heritage but also has the potential to generate income if developed in a more systematic manner.
“These handicrafts are the authentic heritage of our community.
“If preserved and promoted well, they will not only serve as a symbol of cultural identity but also become an economic resource for the local community,” he said when speaking at the closing of the Traditional Biya Handicraft Workshop here recently.
Dr Jerip, who is also Mambong assemblyman, also urged participants to make use of digital platforms such as Facebook and TikTok to expand their market reach and enhance the appeal of local handicraft products.
The workshop, organised by the Women’s Bureau of the Kuching Biya Association, was held over several days and successfully gathered 62 participants from 13 villages under the association, guided by seven experienced instructors.
Participants were trained in producing seven types of traditional Bidayuh Biya handicrafts, including Tapak, Tipok, Tips; Ambik Kurang, Ambik Tarih Plastik; Dahkan, Kotor, Juat; Dotot; Sukup; Baak Book, Buraad; and Mirad.
The programme also featured an exhibition of participants’ handicraft works, showcasing the success of the workshop in nurturing a new generation of creative and competitive heirs of Biya handicraft art.
