KUCHING: Leader Energy Group Bhd (Leader Energy), through its subsidiary Leader Energy (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd (LESSB), has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB), via Syarikat Sesco Bhd (Sesco), to develop a 100-megawatt (MW) large-scale solar farm in Tanjung Manis.

The company said the project marks a significant milestone in Sarawak’s renewable energy journey and underscores Leader Energy’s commitment to advancing Malaysia’s clean energy transition.

The catalytic project will be undertaken in close collaboration with local partners, Pusaka Capital Sdn Bhd, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC), and Smartgen Energy Sdn Bhd.

Scheduled for completion by December 31, 2027, the solar farm will supply clean and reliable electricity to Sesco under a 30-year direct PPA.

This will support Sarawak’s aspiration to build a sustainable, low-carbon energy mix.

Leader Energy’s Executive Deputy Chairman and Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Datuk Sean H’ng, described the initiative as more than just a company milestone.

“This project represents an important step forward for Sarawak in unlocking its solar potential.

“We are proud to support Sarawak Energy’s vision for energy transition while reinforcing our own aspiration of ‘RE-Energising a tomorrow where renewable energy uplifts lives and economies’,” he said in a recent statement.

He added that the Tanjung Manis project is not only about delivering renewable energy but also about capability transfer and creating long-term value in the region.

The project reflects Leader Energy’s strategic priorities under Vision 2030, including its commitment to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions.

For Sarawak, it cements the state’s position as a clean energy leader while strengthening its capacity to meet growing electricity demand sustainably.

SEB, Malaysia’s largest renewable energy developer, is expanding its renewable energy footprint to meet the state’s generation targets of 10GW by 2030 and 15GW by 2035.

Its generation mix is predominantly renewable hydropower, complemented by indigenous thermal resources to ensure supply security and diversity. The state is also targeting 1,500MW of solar capacity by 2030.

Leader Energy Group Bhd together with its subsidiaries and jointly controlled entities is renewable energy developer primarily engaged in the development, ownership, operation and maintenance of power assets and projects.

Leader Energy’s history in the power industry dates back to 1994 following its first independent power producer (IPP) project in Cambodia which subsequently paved the way to venture into the power generation business.
