BETONG: Tanjung Sebekut in Spaoh has been identified as one of Sarawak’s main rice production hubs, with plans to implement two planting seasons a year through modern agricultural initiatives, including improved drainage and irrigation systems.

The initiative was announced during an engagement session with landowners, paddy farmers and cultivators under the Tanjung Sebekut Drainage Control Scheme at the Spaoh Community Hall on Friday.

The programme also featured briefings from the Sarawak Department of Agriculture, the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID), and hybrid seed supplier, Green World Genetics (GWG) Sdn Bhd.

Deputy Premier and Bukit Saban Assemblyman, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, said the project’s success depends on close cooperation between the government and the people, with implementation expected to begin next year.

“Landowners and paddy farmers must play an active role to ensure that the government’s efforts to develop Tanjung Sebekut can be realised,” he said.

He noted that the response to the dialogue session was highly encouraging, adding that further engagement sessions would continue to refine the government’s direction and address issues raised.

In addition to agriculture, Uggah also updated the participants on infrastructure projects in Betong, including the construction of traffic lights around Betong Hospital, MRSM Betong and Simpang Lidong, as well as plans to install lighting at the Sungai Paku Bridge in Spaoh, which is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
