BINTULU: The Sarawak Government remains committed to empowering local agro-entrepreneurs, particularly Dayak oil palm smallholders, as part of efforts to strengthen the State’s agricultural development.
Minister for Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development, Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom, praised the Dayak Oil Palm Planters Association (DOPPA) for its vital role over the past decade in disseminating information, promoting best agricultural practices, and advocating for the rights and interests of Dayak smallholders.
“Close collaboration between DOPPA and government agencies is crucial to ensuring that the rural socio-economic development agenda through the commodity industry can be fully realised,” he said when speaking at the 10th DOPPA Anniversary Dinner held here recently.
Dr Rundi also underscored the importance of crop diversification to ensure the sustainability of smallholders’ income.
He urged them not to rely solely on oil palm but to also cultivate high-value cash crops such as Musang King durian, pineapple, and guava, in line with the government’s vision to modernise the agricultural sector and strengthen food security in the state.
Addressing global challenges such as deforestation issues and international market pressures, he stressed that the state government will continue to safeguard the interests of Dayak smallholders, particularly in matters concerning Native Customary Rights (NCR) land ownership and compliance with certification standards.
To support DOPPA’s ongoing efforts, Dr Rundi announced a RM50,000 allocation to the association to implement various initiatives, including seminars, technical workshops, and community activities aimed at enhancing members’ knowledge and skills.
He called on DOPPA’s members to shift from traditional mindsets to modern and smart entrepreneurship, ensuring that the oil palm industry continues to drive Sarawak’s socio-economic growth.
At the same event, Dr Rundi also presented the 2025 Exemplary Oil Palm Planter Award to Anthony Luta, recognising his dedication and exemplary farm management practices.
