BAU: The Sebuku Road, stretching from the Bau District Police Headquarters to the Tondong Bridge, will undergo an upgrading project estimated to cost RM40 million to improve safety and comfort for road users.

Deputy Minister of Transport (Maritime and Riverine) Datuk Henry Harry Jinep said the road has become the main route for residents travelling between Kuching and Bau since the construction of the Tondong Bridge.

However, he said the existing road has become narrow and increasingly unsafe due to the growing volume of vehicles.

“A wider road is needed to prevent flooding, ease traffic congestion, especially when students from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Bau return home and ensure that Sebuku is not left behind in the wave of development.

“This project is part of our planning, and the cost may reach up to RM40 million due to rising construction expenses. It will also take some time to implement,” he said when officiating the Mooncake Festival organised by the Sebuku Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) at SJK Chung Hua Sebuku Hall here recently.

Henry, who is also the Tasik Biru assemblyman, said that while waiting for the main project to begin, available funds would be used for immediate road improvement works.

As for road paving works leading to residential areas, he said the matter will be referred to the Bau District Council for further action.

Additionally, the construction of new community halls for residents in Sebuku and Taiton has also been prioritised.

He added that a new road project in the Taiton area is currently underway to facilitate the extension of clean water and electricity supply and to support the building of the new hall.
