LONDON: Manchester United manager, Ruben Amorim, earned much-needed relief as his side secured a convincing 2-0 victory over Sunderland at Old Trafford on Saturday, easing mounting pressure ahead of the international break.

The Portuguese coach, who had collected just 34 points from his previous 33 Premier League matches, saw his bold team selection pay off as United produced one of their most composed displays of the season.

Old Trafford observed a minute of silence before kick-off to honour the victims of a terror attack on a Manchester synagogue earlier in the week.

United responded with purpose from the outset, with Mason Mount opening the scoring in the eighth minute after finishing smartly from Bryan Mbeumo’s cross.

Benjamin Sesko doubled the lead before half-time, pouncing on a long throw-in to net his first Old Trafford goal since joining from RB Leipzig in a £74 million move.

Goalkeeper Senne Lammens impressed on his Premier League debut, keeping a clean sheet to cap a confident performance from the hosts.

“We were a competitive and mature team today,” Amorim said.

“Now we have to deliver this kind of performance away from home as well.” – AFP
