LUBOK ANTU: The Batang Ai Hydroelectric Power has contributed significantly to building local capacity and creating jobs since its commissioning 40 years ago.

Utility and Telecommunication Minister Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi said the project provided opportunities for Sarawakians to work as engineers, managers and technical staff.

He added that the dam, which began operating in 1985, also enabled the development of Sarawak’s high-voltage transmission network and improved electricity reliability.

“Beyond power generation, Batang Ai helped train and employ Sarawakians across different levels, proving renewable energy can uplift both community and economy,” he said.

He said this during the Batang Ai Hydroelectric Plant’s 40th anniversary, officiated by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg here today (Oct 6).

Julaihi asserted that the project showed Sarawak made the right decision in investing in renewable hydropower to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

“With future cascading hydro projects, Sarawak will become a hub for renewable electricity not only in Borneo but also across ASEAN,” he added.

He congratulated the Sarawak government and Sarawak Energy Berhad for achieving four decades of renewable energy supply through Batang Ai.

Julaihi said continued expansion of renewable energy would create further opportunities and bring long-term benefits for Sarawak and its people.
