KUCHING: A total of 29,177 Primary Six pupils from 1,050 government primary schools across Sarawak will be sitting for the Dual Language Programme (DLP) assessment on Oct 15 and 16.
Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn said all government schools in the state will participate in the assessment, except for a few small schools (Sekolah Kurang Murid, SKM) which do not have Primary Six pupils.
“All government schools in Sarawak are involved, but some small schools are not participating because they have no Primary Six students.
“For example, when I was in Limbang recently, there was a school that only had 15 pupils in total,” he told reporters after officiating at the closing of the Career Message System (SPEAK) Phase 2 programme at Raia Hotel and Convention Centre today.
Roland said the DLP assessment aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the programme, which enables students to learn Science and Mathematics in English, in line with efforts to strengthen students’ proficiency in the language.
Sarawak will implement the standardised DLP assessment for Primary Six pupils in government schools based on international standards set by Cambridge University Press and Assessment, starting this month.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg had previously stated that the Ministry of Education (MOE) has granted permission to the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD) to collaborate with the University of Cambridge to implement the programme.
The collaboration aims to ensure that the implementation of DLP in Sarawak meets international standards while enhancing the teaching and learning of Science and Mathematics in English.
This initiative reflects the state government’s commitment to strengthening the state’s bilingual education system, in line with its aspiration to produce competitive, globally knowledgeable students who are ready to meet the challenges of a knowledge-based economy.
