SARATOK: Police arrested two individuals believed to be involved in a series of phone scam cases during an operation codenamed Ops Kesan, conducted by the Saratok District Police Headquarters’ Commercial Crime Investigation Division today.

Saratok District Police Chief, DSP Mathew Maggie, said the operation, led by Inspector Sopian Zainuddin, resulted in the arrest of a 42-year-old woman and a 20-year-old man.

He said the arrests were made following investigations into three separate fraud cases reported between 2023 and 2025, involving total losses amounting to tens of thousands of ringgits.

“In the first case, a victim lost RM39,080.74 after being lured into a non-existent investment scheme through a Telegram application. The victim was told that higher investments would yield higher returns,” he said in a statement.

He added that in the second case, a complainant befriended a man through TikTok who later claimed to be sending a parcel containing RM45,000.

“The victim was contacted by a so-called courier company demanding tax payments and eventually lost RM7,000 after the parcel never arrived,” he said.

He said the third case involved a WhatsApp scam, where the victim was asked to make a hotel payment of RM380 and RM110 for food, but the complainant became suspicious and later lodged a police report.

Both of the suspects, believed to be mule account holders, admitted that the bank accounts used were under their names but claimed ignorance of any money being deposited.

Their statements, fingerprints and documentation were recorded before they were released on police bail pending further investigation by the State Commercial Crime Investigation Department.

Mathew said all cases are being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
