LONDON, England: Cristiano Ronaldo said he was “incredibly proud” to have achieved a “unique milestone” after becoming the all-time record goalscorer in World Cup qualifying, reported PA Media/dpa.
The 40-year-old scored twice in Portugal’s 2-2 draw with Hungary to take his qualifying tally to 41, surpassing the 39 of Guatemala’s Carlos Ruiz.
They were his 142nd and 143rd international goals overall but were not enough to guarantee Portugal’s World Cup qualification as Hungary snatched a late equaliser.
“It’s no secret that representing the national team means a lot to me, and that’s why I’m incredibly proud to have achieved this unique milestone for Portugal,” Ronaldo said on X.
“Thank you to everyone who helped me get here. See you in November to finalise our World Cup qualification!” – BERNAMA-PA MEDIA/dpa
