SERIAN: Lower secondary students from across the division have showcased their creativity and communication skills in the 2025 Serian District Lower Secondary English TED Talk Competition.

Held at St Matthew Parish Hall in Kampung Mundai, Padawan yesterday (Oct 17), the competition was jointly organised by the Serian District Education Office and the Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA).

It featured participants from nine schools and involved six DBNA branches across the division, namely Serian, Kedup, Tebedu, Bung Sadung, Padawan and Siburan.

The ceremony was officiated by Minister of Education, Human Development and Talent Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn who praised the initiative for nurturing creativity, resilience, and communication skills among students.

“This competition has been more than just a platform for speeches – it has been a celebration of ideas, expression, and the power of youth voices.

“Each participant has shown that leadership begins with the courage to share an idea,” he said.

He highlighted that while Artificial Intelligence reshapes the workforce, human competencies such as creativity, empathy, and sound judgment remain invaluable, with platforms like the TED Talk Competition helping students develop essential soft skills, including communication and critical thinking, to complement technological advancement.

“AI can automate tasks, but only humans can lead with intuition, emotion, and compassion. Effective communication is the key to staying relevant and impactful in the modern economy,” he added.

Sagah also expressed gratitude to teachers, education officers, and coordinators for their mentorship, noting that their belief in students gives them the confidence to stand tall and the assurance that their voices matter.

He further congratulated all participants, describing each as a winner for their courage and passion, and encouraged them to use the experience as a foundation for future achievements while continuing to use their voices for positive change in the world.
