MIRI: Sarawak Oil Palms Berhad (SOP) strengthened its industry-academic collaboration with Curtin University Malaysia through an educational industrial visit that gave students a first-hand look at the inner workings of the palm oil sector.
More than 25 students from Curtin’s Faculty of Business participated in the visit to SOP’s Lambir Estate and Lambir Palm Oil Mill, accompanied by lecturers Dr Fayrene Chieng, Dr Tanusree and Dr Ting Qian Hui.
The visit began with a technical briefing by SOP’s in-house engineer, who outlined the company’s operations and sustainability-driven approach to palm oil production.
This was followed by a guided tour of the mill, where students observed the transformation of fresh fruit bunches into crude palm oil (CPO) and palm kernels.
The on-site experience provided participants with a tangible understanding of the palm oil production process and the sophisticated systems that ensure efficiency, quality, and environmental compliance at every stage.
SOP’s Sustainability Department head Galau Melayong said the visit was designed to bridge classroom learning with industry realities.
“This visit offered students a valuable opportunity to see how their academic knowledge translates into practical operations within the palm oil industry.
“They witnessed how plantation management, milling processes and sustainability practices are integrated across the value chain.
“It’s an experience that deepens their appreciation of the sector’s complexity and the innovation driving it forward.”
The initiative reflects SOP’s long-term commitment to nurturing future talent and strengthening ties between academia and industry.
Through continuous engagement and educational programmes, the company aims to equip young professionals with practical exposure and industry insights essential for their future careers.
