KUCHING: From a home that bridges two cultures, a seed of love for language took root in the heart of a young Chinese student, Yap Yi Sen, whose passion for the Malay language has blossomed over the years.
What was once merely a tool for communication with his Indonesian sister has now become the language of triumph, after Yap emerged as the champion of the Unity Speech Competition (Secondary School Category) organised by Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP).
The 16-year-old student from Chung Hua Middle School No. 1, Kuching, said that he never expected to win the title and was deeply grateful for the hard work and countless hours of practice that led to his success.
“I actually joined this competition just to gain experience. I never thought I would win.
“I’m really happy and thankful to my teachers and friends who gave me so much support,” he said when met by Suara Sarawak after the competition’s closing ceremony at the DBP Cultural Hall, here.
Yap’s winning speech, titled ‘Bahtera Perpaduan Mengemudi Lautan Cabaran’ (The Unity Vessel Navigating the Sea of Challenges), captivated judges with its rich metaphors, firm tone, and confident delivery, demonstrating his impressive fluency in Malay.
“Unity is like a skilled captain steering a ship. Without the captain, the ship will lose its course at sea.
“Likewise, Malaysians must stay united so the nation can sail toward excellence and prosperity,” he said passionately while sharing part of his speech with reporters.
Yap’s love for the Malay language began at a young age through his close relationship with his Indonesian sister.
“I grew up with her and we often spoke in Malay because my parents were always busy with work.
“Although I use Chinese at home, I mostly speak Malay with my friends at school, so I have no trouble speaking the language,” he explained.
Fluent not only in Malay, Yap also masters English and Chinese, making him a strong representative of Sarawak in various national competitions.
“Last year, I won first place in the National Student Forum Competition.
In 2023, I also joined a trilingual speech competition in Malay, Chinese and English, and won at the national level,” he said proudly.
His success, he said, was built on discipline and guidance from his teacher, Tee Leyok Poo, who trained him and his peers diligently.
“Teacher Tee is very dedicated. She helped us improve our pronunciation, delivery style, and confidence,” Yap added.
Sometimes, his passion even follows him into his dreams.
“Sometimes before sleeping, I practise a little. I’ve even dreamed that I was giving a speech!” he said with a laugh.
He dedicates at least an hour daily to practice and continues weekly sessions even when there are no competitions.
For Yap, confidence on stage comes from truly understanding the message — not mere memorisation.
“When I understand the meaning, I feel connected to it and speak from the heart. That’s why I’m not afraid to stand before an audience,” he said.
Touching on the declining use of Malay among youth, Yap believes the national language must be cherished as the heartbeat of unity.
“Malaysia and Sarawak are made up of many ethnic groups. Through the national language, we can communicate and understand each other regardless of background or faith — that’s where true unity lies,” he said.
Beyond public speaking, Yap is also active in sports, dance, and music, having even released a Chinese New Year album at a young age.
Despite his many commitments, he maintains balance in his studies and hobbies by limiting gadget use and ensuring sufficient rest.
“I try to manage my time well. I usually sleep before 11 p.m. and focus fully in school,” he shared.
Yap hopes more students will take up public speaking, not just to compete but to build confidence and self-awareness.
“Don’t be afraid to try. What matters most are passion, patience, and the will to learn. Success doesn’t come overnight,” he advised.
From what began as a simple household language, Malay has become the voice that lifted him to victory – proving that language transcends race and unites those who embrace it with sincerity.
