KUCHING: Team Cyprus Sharks are back here for their third visit, bringing skill, dedication and a love for the city with them.

“We love the city; we love the organisation and the people here. The best people in the world,” said Fanni David, reflecting why the small but committed team keeps returning.

The team, hailing from Cyprus, competes in multiple categories including premier, mixed, women, and masters’ events.

Despite being a relatively small squad, they have managed to make a mark with their disciplined approach and international experience.

“It’s our second time here, and every visit is a new experience. The city is amazing, and the people make it feel like a second home. That’s why we keep coming back,” said teammate, Maria Boikova.

The trio told Sarawak Tribune at Kuching Waterfront today that training is a year-round commitment for the team, with paddlers dedicating two hours a day to prepare for competitions.

Their ages range from 30 to 66, highlighting both youthful energy and veteran experience in the team.

The Cyprus Sharks are a multinational team representing Cyprus at the Sarawak International Dragon Boat Regatta (SIDBR) held from October 24 to 26.

Their paddlers include athletes from Hungary, Russia and other countries.

Even with travel distances of seven and five hours for some team members, the Cyprus Sharks remain committed to competing at their best.

“It’s a long journey, but it’s worth it,” said Lex Sivakova, another team member.

The team has also been exploring local cuisine, sampling traditional dishes while embracing the city’s culture.

“We have tried the local food. It’s interesting, but delicious,” said Fanny with a smile.

As the regatta continues, their team reflects the international friendship and love for the sport that events like SIDBR 2025 bring together.
