SIBU: The Sacred Heart Secondary School here held its 22nd Annual Speech Day 2025, with various awards presentation for outstanding students and teachers on Saturday.

The event, which took place at the Mill Hill De La Salle Centenary Hall, was graced by a former student as guest of honour, Tan Sri Clement Hii, who is currently group managing director of SEG International Bhd and founder cum executive chairman of HCK Capital Group.

Speaking at the event, the school principal, David Teo Wu, extended deepest appreciation to Hii for being an ever-supportive patron.

He stressed that his unwavering commitment, philanthropic spirit and generous support played a crucial role in the growth of the school and the success of events such as the Speech Day.

Pointing out that the past year has been one of outstanding achievements in every sphere of school life, he said in academics, the students have achieved excellence with many attaining top ranks at state and national levels.

In co-curricular activities, he outlined that from sports to uniformed bodies, debate to innovation competitions, the students continue to make the school proud — winning accolades and demonstrating excellence in character and leadership.

He further stated that the student affairs unit has been instrumental in fostering discipline, well-being, and strong student engagement.

These holistic efforts, he stated, have helped nurture confident, curious learners who are ready to face the world.

None of this, he added, would be possible without the continuous dedication of the teachers and the strong partnership with the parents, community, and private sector.

“We are truly grateful to the parents and community leaders for standing firmly beside us — encouraging, supporting, and guiding our journey.

“As we move ahead into a new chapter, I would like to stress the importance of working hand in hand — parents, teachers, and students together — to ensure our school remains not only a place of academic excellence but also a safe, inclusive, and caring environment.

“The world is evolving rapidly, and so must we. Let us commit to building a safe school culture, one where values, responsibility, and kindness are part of daily life,” Teo added.

Speaking on Hii’s behalf, his daughter, Datin Adeline Hii, who is a chartered accountant by profession, touched on a new perspective on education and life.

She reminded that education is not just about getting a certificate, but about building character, resilience, and purpose.

“Looking back, my education journey taught me far more than what’s written on my degree. It has taught me perseverance, resilience, and to be grateful. It taught me that success is never instant, but built over time with hard work, love, and a lot of support from people who believe in you.

“My dad has always been passionate about education — he truly believes that education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty. Over the years, he’s been contributing to this school’s Speech Day awards — not just because he wants to give back, but because he believes strongly in recognising effort and encouraging students to keep aiming higher,” Adeline stated.
