KUCHING: Former Arsenal youth footballer Josh Robinson has revealed that he has Malaysian and English heritage through his mother, while his father hails from Jamaica — a revelation that has sparked excitement among Malaysian football fans.

The 21-year-old, who now plays for Wigan Athletic, shared his story in a special feature published on Feb 28, 2024, on Arsenal’s official website, where he reflected on his early football journey and family background.

“I grew up in the Leyton area of east London, and my family background is that my dad is Jamaican and my mum is Malaysian and English,” said Robinson.

Before picking up football, Robinson was an avid swimmer. “I got into football by watching people play in my area. It looked fun, so I decided to get involved,” he said.

Robinson’s road to Arsenal’s Hale End academy was far from straightforward. Initially rejected by the club, he earned a second chance a year later after nearly signing with Crystal Palace.

Having started out as a winger before switching to full-back, Robinson said his attacking background gave him an edge in his defensive role.

“Playing as a winger helped me adapt because nowadays full-backs need to attack as well as defend,” he said.

With his Malaysian roots now in the spotlight, fans are hopeful the young defender could one day represent Harimau Malaya.

“My goal is to stay fit, improve, and keep contributing to my team,” he added.
